What is this site for?
Everyone learning German gets stuck on the same question: der, die or das? This site is here to answer it quickly and for free. Look up a word’s article in the Der Die Das Finder, learn the patterns in the article rules guide, or browse the word lists by topic. To make it stick, you practice with games in the Yupo app.
Word list and method
Every word on this site comes from the Yupo app’s own list: 3,079 German nouns in 7 topics. For each word we store its article, its meaning in six languages (English, Turkish, French, Italian, Polish and Russian) and its difficulty level in the app. Difficulty 1–2 is shown as “beginner”, 3 as “intermediate” and 4–5 as “advanced”.
- Travel: 389 words
- Food and drink: 476 words
- Culture and arts: 471 words
- Career and learning: 493 words
- Home and daily life: 361 words
- Nature and the outdoors: 463 words
- Relationships and community: 426 words
The list was reviewed from start to finish in October 2026, but mistakes can still slip through. Every word page links to the Duden and DWDS dictionaries so you can check the article independently. Corrections are listed in the changelog below.
How are the rates calculated?
- Suffix rules: A rule’s hit rate is the share of words with that suffix that take the article the rule predicts. For “-ung → die”, for example, we count all words ending in -ung and check how many take die. Patterns with at least 5 examples and a hit rate of at least 90% are marked “rule”; the rest are marked “tendency”. Suffixes with fewer than 5 examples in the list (such as -lein, -ismus or -eur) are shown as rules based on grammar references, without a rate.
- Compound nouns: A word counts as a compound if it ends in another noun from the list and the part in front has at least 3 letters (Obst + Salat). Known false splits, where the ending is really a suffix (like Koope + Ration), are excluded. Compounds count toward this rule, not toward the suffix rules.
- Case tables: They show the singular with the definite article. No table is shown for plural nouns, weak masculine nouns (n-Deklination) or nouns formed from adjectives, to avoid giving wrong forms.
- Plural nouns: 25 words that are used in the plural in German (such as Eltern, Spaghetti, Pommes) are marked “plural”; they take die, but they are not feminine.
The rates are based only on Yupo’s list; they are not exact statistics for the whole German language. The rules are strong hints, not laws without exceptions.
Changelog
- – Three more articles corrected: der Badezimmerschrank (previously das), der Skulpturenpark (previously die), der Couscous (previously die). About 790 word meanings fixed across six languages (meanings that didn’t fit the topic, e.g. Schloss = lock, Boden = floor; female job titles; untranslated words), and five spellings aligned with Duden (e.g. Hi-Fi-Anlage).
- – Rule explanations corrected: compounds and loanwords no longer count toward suffix rates, false compound splits (such as Bambus and Mitglied) were removed, and weak and adjectival nouns no longer get a case table.
- – The site is now available in all of Yupo’s store languages: Turkish, English, German, French, Italian, Polish and Russian.
- – Three articles corrected: der Bambushain (was die), das Berufsfeld (was der), der Ingwertee (was die).
- – The site was generated from Yupo’s word list for the first time.
